ME 123: Computer Aided design
During the autumn quarter of my sophomore year I took ME 123, which is UW's computer modeling class. Computer Aided Design (CAD) is a critical tool for engineers, but I would argue that it is extremely useful for everyone. It allows you to design almost anything you can imagine in 3D. The class employed the use of "Solidworks", a common CAD package that is similar to those used in Industry such as Catia.
I loved this class. I loved the ability to actually create a 3-D model of anything I could imagine in my mind. To the left you can see a piggybank I designed for an extra-credit assignment.

My Final project
The final project in this class was to complete an original model of our own design. The model had to be an assembly, which means it had to include multiple parts, but other than that the guidelines were pretty free.
I chose to design a castle. I've always loved architecture, and especially anything old. There are so many beautiful architectural styles that are not employed today and should be. Castles are my favorite, and I have always wanted to design my own castle. In fact, I'd love to design my own house in the style of a small castle someday. Browse my photos!
In this particular castle, note the employment of a staircase in the small turret off the side of the large tower. This is a design of my own that maximizes useful floor space at the top of the tower, which makes sense as that will be a popular room to visit. Also note that nearly all the ceilings are designed to be built from rock or stone, with only compression members, and no tension involved.
